Betrayal Trauma for Professionals
Accessibility, affordability, and anonymity of sexual content that is available on the internet has resulted in an increased number of those who suffer from a sexual addiction (Carnes, 2010), and therefore the complex pain and trauma of their partners is also on the rise (Bergner & Bridges, 2002).
Understanding the impact that a loved one’s chronic betrayal has on an individual is critical in helping that individual recover. As the research and general understanding of sex addiction and betrayal trauma continue to evolve it is important that a compassionate and educated lens in addressing these issues is applied to the individuals that we may encounter.
I have been researching and treating betrayal trauma with individuals and groups for a number of years. I am a Certified Clinical Partner Specialist (CCPS) with The Association of Partner of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists (APSATS), and I was awarded the gold medal for my thesis addressing the impact of sex addiction on spouses. It is my hope to provide free psychosocial educational presentations for professionals who may work with individuals who experience betrayal trauma.
Potential topics addressed in a Betrayal Trauma presentation:
- Sex addiction versus one or two affairs/ indiscretions
- Symptoms and impacts of betrayal trauma
- Betrayal trauma versus co-dependency
- Helping individuals recover from betrayal trauma
